Ophrys promontorii.
Ophrys du promontoire.
Ophrys lunulata subsp. promontorii.
(O. Danesch & E. Danesch)
Ophrys promontorii (Promontory Ophrys): Medium-sized Ophrys with large, dull flowers. The very dark lip, ranging from brown to black, exhibits a strong external hairiness and a highly variable macular pattern, often minimalistic and shiny. The tubercles are usually very pronounced and pointed but can sometimes be absent. The coloration of the petals and sepals varies, with the sepals being green or slightly tinted with pink, while the two lateral petals are distinctly more colorful in shades of pink or light purple.
The Monte Gargano is sometimes referred to as a "promontory," which is how this Ophrys gets its name. A nomenclatural puzzle, this Ophrys is related to the "umbrella" species Ophrys sphegodes or to Ophrys lunulata (from the same group), which is recognized directly as a species, of which this Ophrys would be a subspecies.
